Post-Storm Sandbag Guidance

October 30, 2026

SAVE THEM FOR THE NEXT STORM

With the rainy season approaching, consider keeping your sandbags for future use.

✅ Store clean, dry sandbags in a covered area above ground and out of direct sunlight.

CLEAN SANDBAGS

If your sandbags were used only for stormwater protection and were not exposed to sewage, chemicals, oil, fuel, or other contaminants:

Reuse the Bags

  • Save them for future storm protection.
  • Let bags dry completely before storing.

Reuse the Sand

  • Mix into soil.
  • Use in planters or flowerbeds.
  • Use for landscaping projects.

Disposal

  • Empty bags may be placed in the trash.
  • Empty bags may also be taken directly to a landfill.
  • Local landfills, including Miramar, Sycamore, Otay, and Borrego Springs, accept storm-related sandbags.

🚫 Do not place sandbags or empty bags in recycling bins.

CONTAMINATED SANDBAGS

If sandbags have come into contact with:

  • Raw sewage
  • Industrial chemicals
  • Petroleum products
  • Other hazardous materials

Handle Safely

  • Wear gloves and protective eyewear.
  • Do not reuse the sand or bags.
  • Contact the landfill or facility before transport, as special handling requirements may apply.
  • A hazardous waste contractor may be required in some cases.

IMPORTANT

🚫 Do not place full sandbags in curbside carts, dumpsters, or recycling containers.

Full sandbags are too heavy for collection equipment and may create safety hazards.

If the sand is clean, remove it from the bags and reuse it in soil, landscaping, planters, or flowerbeds.

🚫 Never place sand in streets, storm drains, creeks, or waterways.
